Forms and Symptoms of Mesothelioma

Forms and Symptoms of Mesothelioma

Pleural Mesothelioma (Lungs)

Pleural mesothelioma occurs in the lining of the lungs, causing fluid build-up. This is the most common type of asbestos-caused cancer, affecting 75% of mesothelioma victims. If diagnosed early, the recommended treatment is curative surgery, though other treatments will improve quality of life based on the stage of the cancer.

Common symptoms of pleural mesothelioma include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Persistent dry cough
  • Persistent chest pain
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Fever and night sweats
  • Fatigue

Peritoneal Mesothelioma (Abdomen)

Peritoneal mesothelioma develops in the abdomen lining. It is the second most common form of mesothelioma and occurs in 10-25% of victims. With this form of the disease, the mesothelium (organ lining) will thicken and there will be fluid buildup. Unfortunately it is difficult to treat due to the speed of metastasis.

Common symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Abdominal swelling
  • Unexpected weight loss
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation/diarrhea
  • Fatigue

Pericardial Mesothelioma (Heart)

With pericardial mesothelioma fluid buildup will develop in the lining of the heart cavity and between the heart tissues. This is a very rare form of mesothelioma, affecting about 1% of patients.

Common symptoms of pericardial mesothelioma include:

  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Chest pain
  • Difficulty with breathing
  • Coughing
  • Fever and night sweats
  • Fatigue

Testicular Mesothelioma

Testicular mesothelioma occurs in the lining of the testes and affects less than 1% of asbestos-related cancer patients. The most common treatment is surgery, which may be recommended alongside other treatment options. Due to the rarity of testicular mesothelioma, there is no concrete list of symptoms, but possible indicators of the disease include testicular lumps and/or swelling of the scrotum.
